3D Scanning & Reverse Engineering
Sometimes the only blueprint left is the object itself.

Physical object in. Useful digital geometry out.
Reverse engineering is not simply pressing a scan button. The useful result depends on what the model must do afterward. A visual reference, replacement component and dimensionally critical mating part can require different workflows.
Share photos, approximate dimensions and your intended use before bringing or shipping the object. We review whether scanning, measurement, CAD reconstruction or a combination is appropriate for the job.
Good reasons to reverse engineer a part
- A replacement part has no available CAD file.
- The manufacturer no longer supports the component.
- An existing part needs modification rather than exact duplication.
- A new component must fit around existing physical geometry.
- A handmade or legacy object needs editable digital geometry.
A scan is reference data. Manufacturing needs decisions.
Raw captured geometry may contain noise, holes, inaccessible surfaces or more detail than useful CAD needs. Depending on the project, the next step can involve cleanup, rebuilding features, measuring critical interfaces and validating against the original object.
- Evaluate the object and end use. Define which surfaces and dimensions matter.
- Capture or measure the useful geometry. Choose an appropriate method for the object.
- Reconstruct a usable model. Agree on reference geometry or editable CAD as the deliverable.
- Validate critical fit when appropriate. Review the reconstructed geometry and any test prints.
- Move into prototype or production. Quote printing separately or as part of the agreed project.
Accuracy is project-specific.
We discuss geometry, required tolerance and intended use before accepting work where dimensional precision is critical. Capturing an object’s shape does not automatically establish its original material properties or certify a replacement for the same duty.
Alt 3D is based in Rio Rancho and works with customers in Albuquerque and across New Mexico. Send your location along with the object details so we can discuss an appropriate handoff.
Scanning & reverse engineering FAQ
Can you copy any physical object?
Not every shape or surface is equally suitable for every capture method. Contact us with photos and approximate dimensions first.
Will I receive an editable CAD model?
That depends on scope. Scan-derived reference geometry and reconstructed CAD are different deliverables. We confirm which you need before quoting.
Can you manufacture the replacement afterward?
Often, yes, where the application and available printing materials are suitable. Reverse engineering, design revision, prototyping and additive manufacturing can be part of one workflow. We do not provide painting or on-site installation.
Have the part, but not the file?
Show us the object and explain what the next version needs to do.
